Not long ago I met an old Bosnian lady whom a friend and I interviewed for a project we are working on. Before she would tell us anything she prepared coffee for us. She told us about her life in a very matter of fact way, how she got married, how she got children, her relationship with her husband. She lived through two wars, lost her husband while she was still young, raised her two sons who are both university educated, one living near her. Now she cares for her grandchildren. She told us about all this with a great smile and a sharp sense of humour. But when we asked her which period of her life was the most happy, she seemed surprised. ” I don’t think I have ever been happy. I just did what I had to do” was her answer.
